Evaluation – What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Here is the questionnaire I created which allowed me to gain information back so I was able to answer the question.

Evaluation – How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

4 Apr

Through my primary and secondary research I was able to see how ancillary tasks from real life products works together to create a theme as well as how they help to extend each others design features and style. I wanted my ancillary tasks to have a distinct themewithin that allowed the audience to identify them with one another as well as with thedigipak music video. A prominent style choice that appears in all of my products is the beach and the seaside location as well as the actors used in my pieces. I decided to use the location and the models in my products as I think it really helps give a unity to the piece as well as allowing the audience to interpret and create synergy between the products. I feel by incorporating this I same meaning from all of the different products which should ultimately help to increase the interest of my target audience.I tried to incorporate a distinct look and style to it which I think really works to c

The images used within my ancillary tasks link back to the setting and the design within the music video creating a juxtaposition between the products. The images used really help to exaggerate the mood of the music whilst also creating a well composed poster. The simplistic nature of the image is am able to attract the audience to the overall style and appearance of the product which will help integrate the artist into the industry and into the genre. By creating such similarly styled products I am able to show them as a whole package or as individual pieces. I have created these similarities through the use of similar fonts and composition style which I think link back to the genre and the style of the music as well as with the design aspects of the products. When looking at my music video and my ancillary tasks you are able to see the connections through the use of the colours, for instance in my music video I feature quite a few shots that show the beach and the pier. By using these locations I am able to replicate their colouring within my ancillary tasks, for example in my poster and my digipak the boxes used to help the text stand out are in a light grey which is reflected in the colouring for the shots in my music video as well as the progression from colour to black and white in my music video. The mise-en-scene from my music video is conveyed in my products as I used the costumes colouring within my digipak for the background editing the colouring of photographs to create  a connection between the all the products.

Town of Temples Posterreflected within the music video which I think really helps to  draw the package together which also highlight the style of the music which lets the audience know what they can expect from the products. In my music video I use side and behind shot types to create a variety within the work, I have tried to extend this into the photographs that I have used for my product so there appearance is the allowing a continuity to be formed throughout my main and ancillary products. As Town of Temples are unknown artists I was able to complete create the bands image and the design to their work which really allowed me to increase the connection between the products and between the artist and the audience themselves.

I also thought about releasing the products separately to ensure a maximum audience is reached. I plan to initially release the poster which will be able to gain attention, I will then follow this release by releasing the video which will reach a different audience than the poster ensuring that a variety of different groups view the product then finally releasing the digipak which sales may be increased as it will have already been established.

Evaluation – In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?-

It was initially  found it hard to an artist that was similar to my artists music as each acoustic rock song seems to be extremely different but eventually I found a song and a genre that was similar to mine so I focused on that genre as it allowed me to look at the conventions and style choices of the genre. I decided to focus on rock as it was the closest to my chosen artists sound. Once I had decided on the genre I began looking at the conventions of it’s products and of it’s music video’s which allowed me to look into details and styles that I could show in my own work. I looked at these conventions and institutions through the primary and secondary research that I developed, this research allowed me to look at how the institutions logistics effect the design and the style of the products and ultimately the genre.

Through my research I was able to develop an understanding of the conventions of music videos and music video’s within my chosen genre. One of the main conventions of a rock music video is to feature the band in shot to represent the rock identity of the band however because of my choice of song, I decided to go against this convention and have the music video as a completely narrative based video. I feel by using the narrative style I was able to create an identity for the song and the artist whilst also creating a style of video that the audience are able to link to.  Andrew Goodwin states that a music video must have:

– A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

– A relationship between the music and the visual, with the visuals, amplifying or contradicting the music.

( A link to my secondary research) https://ellebrooking.wordpress.com/2012/11/23/secondary-research-on-music-videos-digipaks-t/

I feel that I have developed both of these conventions as I have allowed the text to enhance the lyrics to the song rather than hinder them. By using a narrative based style I am able to bring the lyrics to life in a way that the audience can absorb. I feel I have also created a relationship by creating the narrative. As I was piecing together my script and storyboard I was trying to create a plot that linked to the song to create a more extensive story for both elements. Although I have followed the rules of creating a narrative clip I have challenged the normal plots that occur within the rock genre. I chose to create a love story within my music video as the songs lyrics speak of love and lost love which I think works well with my narrative. However, within rock music videos they usually depict a video of a party or an evening out which is something I openly tried to stay away from as I wanted my piece to stand out and to connect with the audience on a emotional level. A convention that I did use within my music video is the use of a chronological time sequence as I felt it would be hard to understand as there is no dialogue to indicate a change in time, I also felt that the video works better with a logical sequence as it creates a simple story that the audience can follow whilst also focusing on the song itself.

Christopher Budd stated that “A sign is representation that refers to something else and has meaning, such as a car. A code means the structure of how signs are organised into systems to make meaning.” This theory suggests that the images and the objects that appear on the page should reflect the nature of the product through the use connotations. I feel by using similar pictures in my Digipak and poster I am able to accomplish the same connotations through my work. The use of the beach as the background highlights the escapism element of the music which I think really works well to extend the style of the music and the meaning. The use of the blues and the greens help to create a relaxing and calming feeling to the pieces with I think challenged what is normally shown through my genres production work as they would normally show bright colored objects and designs.

The use of a single person on the front of the poster and the digipak rather than a band shot or logo which would normally appear helps to highlight the basic nature of the artist and the music and the naturalistic style of the song I have chose.   Classic rock products tend to feature attractive male or female models to increase the interest of the audience, I feel that I have both challenged and follow this convention especially on the poster as I have used the used a male model that may attract the audience through the Male Gaze Theory stated by Laura Mulvey however the model is facing away which creates a more relaxed appeal to the model and the picture which fits better with the design overall. I chose to use a basic font for my text which I think is a common feature within the rock genre as the image is more important than the text as the rock audience gain their idea’s and impression from the image more predominately. The posters and digipaks that I have looked at tend to feature a single image that is shown throughout creating a unity through the work which I think I have achieved within my products by using the same model for both products and images that fit the theme throughout my designs.
